Organic and Biodynamic
As many of our ingredients as possible are certified Organic and Biodynamic. We believe Biodynamics is at least as important, if not more so, than organic status. It describes a spiritual-ethical-ecological approach to agriculture, which strives to create a diversified, balanced ecosystem that generates health and fertility as much as possible from within the horticultural environment. Preparations made from fermented manure, minerals and herbs are used to help restore and harmonise the vital life forces of the growing area, to enhance the vital health giving properties of the plant. We source as many of our ingredients as possible from the Biodynamically managed farms and gardens at Botton Village, part of The Camphill Village Trust.
To preserve the integrity of our ingredients, and where safe to do so, all of our products are sold in amber glass apothecary jars, to maintain the properties of the ingredients over a long period of time. The exceptions are products designed for use in the shower.
ANNWYN Botanicals Ingredients’ Purchasing Policy
Our policy on purchasing the ingredients that go into your products is based on 3 principles: the quality and integrity of the product, the people / original source we buy from and the relationship of both of those to Nature and to the environment. We look for fairly traded products from community and fair trade projects wherever possible,as this encourages producers to use organic and co-operative/community principles in their production and to be more ecologically aware, thus empowering them to ask for a fair deal when they sell their produce. These principles encourage a positive cycle of change which respects Nature and people and improves the ability of future generations to sustain themselves.
- We do not use any raw materials made from animal sources, or any animal by-products – unless you count naturally harvested local beeswax.
- We do not use any products which are Vaseline or paraffin/mineral oil based.
- We do not use any perfumes or synthetic aromas of any kind in our products – we use only natural 100% pure essential oils and absolutes, organic wherever possible.
- We do not use any harsh chemicals or Parabens.
- None of our products are tested on animals.
We describe the ingredients that make up each of our products, as well as listing each one on the individual packaging. In an ideal world of course there would be no preservatives, no emulsifiers – and we will not be alone in wishing we could make beautiful products with a shelf life of 2 years without using any ingredient that doesn’t come straight from a Botanical Encyclopaedia – sadly this isn’t possible: the truth is oils and water don’t mix without an emulsifying agent and if we don’t use some kind of broad spectrum preservative, our moisturisers would potentially grow a wide variety of moulds and bacteria.
We use a couple of different preservatives, which are the most natural available (at the time of printing). They are non paraben, non-formaldehyde, with a broad spectrum activity on bacteria, yeasts and moulds, have an excellent safety profile and work well for people with sensitive skin.
Our emulsifiers are Glyceryl Stearate and Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate – both vegetable based.
We have done our best throughout the entire ANNWYN Botanicals range to only use raw materials that are known to be tolerated by the greatest majority of skin types. Indeed, my family all have sensitive, highly reactive skin and this was one of the main reasons for creating the range to start with. We would however always recommend testing any skincare product first, if you are in any doubt – the skin in the crook of the elbow is a good spot to determine if you are likely to have an allergic reaction to a product.
Allergy Advice - citronellol, farnesol, geraniol, limonene, linalool, eugenol, benzyl alcohol, benzyl benzoate, citral
These are naturally occurring compounds in essential oils; they can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, particularly when used in products as isolated compounds. Under legislation introduced in 2005, we have to include these in the ingredients lists of skincare products when they are present in the finished products, regardless of whether the substances are present as added isolated ingredients (such as in a synthetic fragrance), or when they are present as naturally occurring components of other ingredients, as for example in essential oils.
In ANNWYN Botanicals products these substances are only ever present as naturally occurring components of the essential oils we use. In this form, they do not have the same allergenic potential as they have as isolated or synthesised ingredients, however in sensitive individuals they could still cause a reaction and we always recommend a patch test be done first, before using any new product.
